Evening makeup calls for a bit of drama, think shimmery eyes that pop, and seductive lips. Check out our step-by-step guide created by our team of PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTISTS on how to create an evening makeup look for a special night out.
Prep the Skin
Cleanse your skin with a cleanser designed to support your skin’s pH and hydration needs while targeting the removal of dirt, bacteria, and excess oils. Then exfoliate the skin, this provides a beautifully smooth makeup application as all the dead skin cells will be removed. Then apply a hydrating serum to boost the moisture content in the skin and provide a radiant glow, lastly apply a moisturizer suitable for your skin type.
Prime Your Skin
Choose a primer formula that will suit the needs of your skin. For example, if you have oily skin, look for the words “mattifying” or “silicone-free,” as these formulas will help reduce shine in areas that produce oil, and will smooth over enlarged pores making them invisible. If you have dry/dehydrated skin, look for words like “dewy,” “hydrating,” “luminous,” “brightening,” and “glowing” when shopping for a primer, this is guaranteed to amplify the skin’s radiance.
Colour Correct If Needed
In PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTISTRY colour correcting is essentially using a colour that will cancel out or neutralise dark circles, redness, or pigmentation on the skin. For example, if you have very red cheeks you can use a green colour corrector to neutralise the red colour. The trick is to apply the colour corrector on top of the area needing correction and tap the product in with a brush until it is blended well.
Foundation application
For a special event, choose a long-lasting foundation that has over 12 hours of staying power and creates a flawless, airbrushed finish. For a medium to full coverage foundation, it is best to work in layers. After applying a thin layer of foundation to your skin, use a beauty sponge to gently remove excess product. then, apply more product on areas that need a bit more cover. Building up the product in layers ensures you get the most natural finish possible.
Conceal the Trouble Areas
Areas of concern are usually under the eyes if you have dark circles and of course breakout activity. When it comes to the under-eye area, it is best to apply concealer sparingly for the best results. This area is prone to fine lines, so spot concealing is ideal, start by applying it on the inner and outer eye area and build up as necessary. This makes the area less prone to creasing, too.
Powder application
Though you may be tempted to apply a lot of face powder, less is definitely more. Instead of applying powder all over the face, only use powder on the areas that will pick up shiny areas on camera, like the middle of the forehead, sides of the nose, and chin. When applying powder, a PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST will use a small fluffy brush and gently tap the product into the areas that need it. Always choose a colourless powder as it is less likely to disrupt your freshly applied foundation. If your goal is to achieve dewy skin, opt for a finishing powder that has a bit of an iridescence to it, this will provide a radiant finish.
Go For a Subtle Contour
Contouring is the step that can either make or break your look, too much will make it look overly done. We recommend going for a subtle contour that is at least two to three shades darker than your natural skin tone. To achieve a subtle contour, apply the product to the underside of the cheeks, along the jawline, near your hairline, at the top of the head, and along the sides of your nose.
Add Colour with Blush
At this point, your makeup will need a bit of colour as it will be looking a bit flat. Add some life to your skin with a bit of blush. Since blush is one of the first things to fade, a cream formula blush is great as it leaves a natural glow as the evening goes on.
Apply Highlighter
A highlighter should be placed on the high points of the face to accentuate or bring those areas forward. Applying on the highest points of the cheekbones, under the brow bone, and along the bridge of the nose, and along the cupid’s bow at the top of the lips.
Choose an Eye Look
You can never go wrong with a classic smokey eye. Apply dark eyeshadow on the entire eyelid and then blend the shadow along the crease line with a fluffy eyeshadow brush. Do not blend the shadow too far upward. Blend, blend, the blend is always the goal to soften the edges of the shadow. Then apply a matte liquid eyeliner on the upper lash line to lift the eye and then you are ready for the lashes.
Accentuate the Lashes
Opt for a high-intensity volumizing mascara that will accentuate your lashes. A great mascara to use will be one with added fibre bristles that will lengthen and provide volume to even the shortest of lashes. Of course, if you would like more drama, you could apply a set of false eyelashes to add some va va voom!
Brow Grooming
Use a brow gel to comb the brow hairs upwards and outwards, this will give your brows a fuller appearance. After doing this, if there are any gaps you can use a sharpened brow pencil or a small angled brush to try to recreate brow hairs, use a colour closest to the natural brow colour.
Play Up Your Lips
To finish off your look, use a bold/neutral colour in either a matte or gloss formulation depending on your preference and make sure it will last through photos, eating, and drinking.

Signs that your skin is dehydrated:
- Your skin can feel both oily and dry at the same time.
- Your skin tends to change texture based on your environment, the products you use, and your diet.
- You tend to break out occasionally and unexpectedly.
- Your skin is dull, congested, and flakes easily.
- Your skin feels tight, but you prefer very light moisturizers that absorb easily into the skin.
If you are still not sure if your skin is dehydrated, try the pinch test: pinch your skin between two fingers. If it bounces back (meaning it lays flat again) right away, you’re hydrated. If it takes longer to fall, it’s likely you’re dehydrated. It’s worth noting that your skin doesn’t have to fall into the dry skin type to be dehydrated. Combination and oily skin types can also experience dehydration.
What is the best way to treat dehydrated skin?
- Drink plenty of water. You’ve heard it before your body is mostly water, so the skin suffers if you’re deficient.
- Eat a balanced diet with healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, salmon, and nuts, which are high in omega 3, to improve the overall health of your skin.
- Wash your face in warm/cool water. Hot water can dry out the skin by opening pores and allowing moisture to escape.
- Hydrate and moisturize your skin. Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a great ingredient for adding water to the skin, look out for ingredients like squalene in moisturizers which will lock the moisture into the skin.
- For the body, try a clinically proven emollient like colloidal oatmeal. Not only is it hydrating but it’s also anti-inflammatory.
To summarise, when we talk about having dry skin, what we are typically talking about is skin that doesn’t produce a lot of natural oils. But your skin can also be dehydrated, meaning it’s not getting enough water. It’s important to make sure you eat a well-balanced diet, drink enough water, and use products that can help draw water into the skin like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and colloidal oatmeal.
