Health & Skincare (FACIAL GUA SHA )

Gua sha is a new trend in the HEALTH AND SKINCARE INDUSTRY, not only for body treatments but also used in facial treatments to add a holistic twist to the conventional facial massage.

What is Gua sha?

Gua sha is a type of traditional Chinese medicine practice in which a tool is used to scrape the surface of the skin. Gua sha aims to move energy, known as qi or chi, around the body. The name gua sha — pronounced “gwahshah” may also be called skin scraping, spooning, or coining.

Benefits:

Stimulates blood circulation, helps produce collagen by stimulating fibroblast activity, softens fine lines and wrinkles, decreases puffiness, decreases inflammation, diminishes dark circles, temporarily tightens skin, brightens complexion, sculpts facial muscles, encourages cell regeneration and healing, releases tightness, and increases lymphatic drainage.

Tools:

Gua sha tools are created with materials that are seen to have an energy that will support healing, these materials include bian stone, jade, amethyst and rose quartz. Stainless steel tools can also be used for hygienic practices.

Technique:

The therapist will apply oil/serum to the area that is being treated, which allows the therapist to move the tool across the skin more smoothly.

Gentle, light, scrapping and gliding movements are done towards the main lymph nodes of the body. When working on the face avoid applying deep pressure as you would for a body gua sha treatment.

Side effects:

If the pressure is done too hard, bruising or petechiae (a small red or purple spot caused by bleeding into the skin) may occur. This will heal within a day or two.

How often can Gua sha be performed on the skin?

Gua sha may be performed with your monthly facial, or you can purchase a toll to do it in the comfort of your own home. You should start with once a week and gradually increase to every day. It only takes 5 minutes, and your skin will thank you!

Latest Hairdressing Trends (Face framing Techniques)

Thinking of finally getting a short hairstyle such as a pixie cut this year? Well, it may be the right move because it’s among some of this year’s biggest hairstyle trends. It’s never easy deciding on a new haircut or hair colour because of a variety of reasons, from not knowing what suits you to being unable to decide on your favourite style.

This year, some have said braids are (once again) making a comeback and have been seen on models such as Gigi Hadid on the runway.

Solid hair colour can give you fabulously chic vibes, but if you’re looking for something a little different (with a bit more colour) we’ve got something in mind for hairdressing… Focus on your face with some fancy face-framing highlights. Not only are they a fun way to spice up your hair colour, but if placed strategically they’re the perfect style to keep you the center of attention.

Choppy curly haircut pairs perfectly with some golden highlights. Not only will the cut draw attention to your face, but the addition of highlights will give you a subtle and alluring glow. We’d say it’s for sure one of the best face-framing ‘do’s to try for hairdressing.

If you’re looking for colour and style, wispy highlights are a winner. By pulling your hair up into a high puff, your face instantly shines but the addition of some loose highlighted wispy strands, your face becomes the star of the show.

Another simple cut that can be transformed with some simple highlights is an angled bob or pixie. Not only will the haircut lure the eyes to your face but paired with warm highlights this creates the ultimate face-framing hairstyle.

You will find options for different hair textures as well as creative possibilities that are easy to apply in the salon, framing techniques in hairdressing can be done in so many ways and have always been popular for their purpose, to frame the face and have a fresh look about, weather its summer or winter, with the ins and outs of seasons and trends, face framing techniques are always a need.

Plasma Skin Tightening In Health & Skincare / AESTHETICS

Plasma skin tightening is a new trending cosmetic procedure to enhance your skin with long-lasting results.

Plasma Pen ‘fibro blasting’ is a highly versatile and non-surgical procedure that is highly effective in wrinkle smoothing and tightening of the skin.

Plasma skin tightening can treat, repair, lift and rejuvenate any area of the skin to drastically improve and brighten skin tone, elasticity, and texture, significantly tighten loose skin and dramatically reduce and plump up lines and wrinkles.

But what is it you ask?

Fibro blast (Collagen Induction Therapy) is an amazing non-invasive skin treatment that uses a pen-like device to help improve the overall health of the skin, paying much-needed attention to collagen and elastin induction as well as improving sun-damaged skin.

In our Health and Skincare (Aesthetics) course, this is one of the favorite subjects that all the students are always eager to start learning.

How does The Plasma Pen work?

The Plasma Pen handpiece converts electrical energy into electrostatic energy which is transmitted to the applicator tip (probe) by impulse. The device creates an electrical discharge between two electrodes separated by an insulating dielectric barrier. A charge collects on the surface of the barrier and discharges a flash of plasma via the 0.4mm probe within millionths of a second.

Using a continuous direct energy source, the flavoring of nitrogen and oxygen in the air creates a plasma gas.

What areas can be treated?

Any area on the face / body that needs skin tightening.

Examples are:

  • Sagging eyelids and under eyes for lines and wrinkles.
  • Frown lines and bunny lines on nose.
  • Brow lift or correction.
  • Crow’s feet.
  • Ear folds or hollow temples.
  • Acne scars or any other scars.
  • Upper lip like “Smokers lines” or correcting drooping lips.
  • Marionette lines and Jowls.
  • Cheeks and Jawline.
  • Loose skin on Neck and chest.
  • Midi or Full facelift.
  • Hands, arms, legs, knees.
  • Tightening skin on stomach like after a pregnancy.

An example of before, during and after plasma on the forehead:

What to expect on the day of the treatment?

  • No makeup to be applied on the treatment area.
  • You may take an antihistamine 60 minutes prior to your appointment to help with swelling.
  • You may continue to take antihistamines or anti-inflammatories for 2-3 days following your appointment.
  • A numbing agent is applied and left to take effect for up to 20-25 minutes after which the treatment starts with the plasma pen creating the dots spaced closely together.
  • You may feel some heat in the treatment area, which may be uncomfortable and slightly irritating. But most generally clients don’t feel the treatment being done.
  • Treatment time is usually between 20-60 minutes, depending on the size of the area.
  • Immediately after treatment the area may be red and mildly swollen with small carbon crusts (spots).
  • The carbon crusts will lift within 4 -8 days depending on the individual and area treated.
  • You may experience a sensation like a sunburn which will likely last an hour or two.
  • Swelling may appear over the following few hours but more so when eyes are treated and may last 3-4 days.
  • Results gradually improve over the course of the following 8 weeks.
  • After the treatment you will be given thorough aftercare/ homecare instructions to ensure that you see the best results.
  • In the week following treatment (or until the treatment area has fully healed) an exfoliating wash or cleanser should not be used.
  • Avoid alcohol-based cleansers until the area has healed.
  • Results typically between 3-4 years.

Massage Therapy / Massage Technology (Shiatsu)

In our MASSAGE THERAPY/ MASSAGE TECHNOLOGY COURSE, we offer Shiatsu which is a form of Japanese massage bodywork based on pseudoscientific concepts in traditional Chinese medicine. In the Japanese language, shiatsu means “finger pressure”. The technique includes massaging with fingers, thumbs, feet, and palms. It makes use of techniques such as assisted stretching, acupressure, joint manipulation and mobilisation to apply pressure to the human skin to correct internal malfunctions, promote and maintain health and treat specific diseases. Shiatsu massage is best for people who want to feel relaxed and relieve stress, pain, and tension.

Benefits include:

  • Emotional and physical calmness and relaxation.
  • Relieve of stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Tension headache may be relived.
  • Muscle tension reduction.

The techniques used in shiatsu include stretching, holding, and most commonly, leaning body weight into various points along key channels.”

In massage therapy we learn that the practice of shiatsu is based on the traditional Chinese concept of qi, which is sometimes described as an “energy flow”. Qi is supposedly channeled through certain pathways in the human body, known as meridians, causing a variety of effects.  This hour-long massage technique is a non-invasive massage technique for people who feel shy/ uncomfortable when required to take their clothes off for massage, as this massage technique can be performed while the client is fully clothed in their most comfortable and loose clothing.

In MASSAGE THERAPY we learn that the technique carries blood and nutrients to your muscles while eliminating toxins. After stimulating muscles that you may not usually use, you might experience a delayed onset of muscle soreness. This is a physical response to the inflammation as your body heals.

The best way to alleviate any soreness after Shiatsu is to rest as much as possible and stay hydrated, as this will flush out any toxins that come to the surface during the massage.

Shiatsu can be used in the treatment of a wide range of internal, musculoskeletal, and emotional conditions.

It is indicated for:

  • Muscle stiffness
  • Stimulate the skin
  • Aid digestion
  • Influence the nervous system
  • Headaches
  • PMS
  • Digestive disorders
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Stress
  • Anxiety

Musculoskeletal pain, including low back, neck, and joint pain
