Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialized MASSAGE THERAPY / MASSAGE TECHNOLOGY technique in which a range of gentle rhythmic pumping techniques is used to move the lymph fluid in the direction of the lymph nodes in the body.

It uses gentle, rhythmic, and constant movements that mimic the rhythm of the body’s lymphatic system. MLD is a gentle manual technique that stimulates a malfunctioning or fatigued lymphatic system. Keeping the lymphatic system in good condition is vital for promoting good health, and for restoring good health when the system has been compromised through events such as surgery, injury, or illness.

How does MLD work?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage activates the lymph vessels which carry substances crucial to the body’s immunity and removes waste products.

The main aim of manual lymph drainage, or “lymphatic drainage” is to enhance or restore a drainage and transport system that is harmed or slowed down. Most of the lymphatic system is located very close to the surface of the body, therefore the MLD techniques are applied effectively with much less pressure than your average massage. Massage movements include gentle scooping, pumping, circles and stroking towards the main lymph nodes.

The parasympathetic nervous system is activated during Manual Lymphatic drainage massage, therefore reducing stress and stress hormones. A MLD treatment is extremely relaxing, as it calms the nervous system, reduces pain, and restores balance.

Stress and fatigue can weaken our immune system. When our immunity has been compromised, we are more susceptible to viruses or other contagious conditions that might be going around.  Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage can help support the immune system.

The parasympathetic response in the body is stimulated and is favourable in situations where the nervous system has been compromised, such as with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Individuals can benefit from general stress reduction, detoxification and increased immune function.

The benefits of MLD are vast and can be used for the reduction of swelling, skincare and cosmetic surgery, stress, and pain relief and even breast care in cancer patients.
